8 autologous Cord Blood Transplants so far
4-7 December 2004
At the American Society of Hematology 46th meeting, Thornley et al. present a poster paper on family cord blood banking.
Based on the CIBMTR database, they report that in the US and Canada there have been 7 autologous cord blood transplants. If the first autologous transplant in Brazil is also included, then the total for the Americas is 8 autologous cord blood transplants so far (Brazil reference: Ferreira et al. 1999; Bone Marrow Transplantation 24:1041).
Thornley et al. also report that there have been 36 allogeneic transplants of family-banked cord blood. Based on the privately banked transplants reported to this website, that number is too low by approximately a factor of two.
Thornely et al. also surveyed the attitudes of pediatric transplant physicians regarding family cord blood banking. Up to half these physicians would be willing to transplant family cord blood for specific disease sitautions, but the "vast majority of pediatric HSCT physicians do not recommend prophylactic storage of cord blood, even in mixed-ethnicity families."
