NIH Policy on Enhancing Public Access

3 February 2005

The language is released for the NIH Policy on Enhancing Public Access to Archived Publications Resulting from NIH-Funded Research. Advocates of open access want the results of federally funded medical research to be freely available on the internet at the NIH portal PubMed Central (plus sites that enhance PubMed, such as BioMedSearch).  The NIH originally planned to post the full text of journal articles on-line six months after publication.  Under pressure from scientific publishers, the NIH scaled back the delay to one year. Commentary from: American College of Physicians, the SPARC Open Access newsletter, the Alliance for Taxpayer Access.
