Medical Residents Act Drunk
7 Sept 2005
JAMA publishes a study showing that medical residents working "heavy night call" exhibit impaired performance comparable to that associated with .04 to .05 g% blood alcohol concentration. The level 0.05 g% BAC represents 3-4 standard drinks. An accompanying editorial states "residents working 80- to 90-hour weeks are at an equivalent or greater risk compared with an intoxicated physician."
